Health-at-Home 2020: The New Standard of Care Delivery

The care delivery pendulum was already swinging toward more home-based health care before 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the entire health care system to take a fresh look at the safest and most accessible way to deliver care.

Providing an analytical deep dive into current attitudes around home healthcare, this report highlights findings from 1,000 US adults and 75 health plan executives, demonstrating why the trend towards care at home is in the best interest of both insurers and members.

In addition to insight around consumer demand and health plan readiness, the 2020 Health-at-Home report includes perspectives from providers and policymakers who examine the growing opportunities as well as the legislative and regulatory mechanisms that are driving more care home now and into the future.

Report Highlights:

• 72 percent of all respondents prefer to recover at home versus a medical facility following a major medical event.
• 69 percent are interested in regular, at-home check-ins with doctors.
• 63 percent would prefer getting treatment at home over going to the a doctor’s office or medical facility
• 62 percent cite ‘comfort’ as the top appeal of receiving health care at home, more than the 51 percent who say staying away from public places during the COVID-19 is a top reason for health care at home.

• 97 percent of payer respondents agree the trend toward moving health care to the home is in the best interest of insurers and members alike.
• 95 percent agree treating members at home is often more cost effective in the long-term than treating in a facility.
• 95 percent say supportive care and coaching at home can extend the reach of the primary care provider to monitor people and provide better care.
• About half of payers (48 percent) have already increased the availability of at-home health care options for members where possible, and about 1 in 3 (36 percent) are in the process of increasing at home care options.
