CES 2016 Unveils Latest Connected Health Tech

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas gave the world an exciting glimpse into the future of connected health technology and its ability to allow patients heal and age at home, where they most want to be. From wearable devices, including smart shirts and bracelets, to fitness tracking and healthcare apps, it’s apparent that the world is becoming more conscious of personal health and well-being.  These devices are easy to use and make monitoring convenient, increasing their potential to create a better home care experience.
 
Below is a roundup of the latest health technology innovations showcased at CES 2016 that may potentially impact the way we receive care at home:
 
Acer's Cloud Computing-Based Health Monitoring

 

  • What is it? A set of monitoring devices that enable users to continually measure vital signals and home air quality. The recorded data is regularly uploaded to a cloud- based management platform through the Acer Open Platform (AOP), for medical professionals to analyze in real-time.
  • Potential Impact on Home Care: Patients who require health monitoring for extended periods, can interact with their physician through smart devices or interactive equipment for remote diagnostic purposes.  In addition, care teams will have access to a significant amount of patient data that they can use to identify potential risks, in real-time.


Quell Wearable Intensive Nerve Stimulation (WINS)
 

  • What is it? Historically, this wearable smart-band helps users manage chronic pain by stimulating the sensory nerves of the wearer and blocking pain signals before they can spread throughout the body. The latest version, unveiled at CES 2016, gives users the option to control their therapy via a mobile app and includes several additional enhancements including extended battery life and advanced sleep tracking.
  • Potential Impact on Home Care: Quell puts the patient in control of his/her own pain therapy, allowing them to track and measure their sessions. With the added benefit of preventing pain signals in the body, Quell has the potential to limit and even prevent unnecessary visits to the physician’s office.

MedWand™ Handheld Device
 
  • What is it? The world’s first handheld sensory device that combines several diagnostic tools for use with remotely-located medical providers, creating a virtual medical examination experience. MedWand allows doctors to remotely diagnose many common medical conditions affecting children and adults, including: fever, asthma and ear infection.
  • Potential Impact on Home Care: The role of the in-office visit is changing and while nothing will ever replace an in-person visit to monitor long-term, chronic conditions, this innovation could potentially reduce the number of visits for less complicated ailments.

MOCAheart Heart Health Tracker
 
  • What is it? The world’s smallest heart health tracker that measures heart rate, blood oxygen level and MOCA INDEX, an indicator derived from blood velocity that is related to blood pressure. It allows users to evaluate their risk status through a pair of thumb scanners, which sync to a corresponding smartphone app.
  • Potential Impact on Home Care: Similar to cloud-based technology, this technology gives patients access to data that they can use to monitor their health and prevent potential risks. The MOCAheart is another standout example of empowering the patient with the ability to understand and protect their own health.
